Who is didao for?

English speakers learning Mandarin who already try to write in Chinese and want to say what they actually mean, in Mainland Mandarin with simplified characters.

Why not just ask Siri, Gemini or ChatGPT?

They translate a whole sentence and send you to another app, so you learn nothing. didao works inside the keyboard you're already typing in, keeps the Chinese you wrote, and completes only what you couldn't say, in natural wording that fits your style. Then it shows you why it works and turns it into practice from your own conversation. The goal is that you need it less over time.

Will this help me speak, too?

didao is for writing, where you have a few extra seconds to think. You still recall the words, build the thought and choose the tone yourself, so the phrases you learn in text are ones you can carry into spoken conversation.

Will it write or send messages for me?

No. You choose whether to insert a suggestion, and you decide when to send. didao never sends a message.

Do I have to change keyboards?

Keep typing with your usual keyboard. When you want help, switch to the didao keyboard, use a suggestion, then switch back. The dictionary and flashcards live in the didao app.

How do I know a suggestion fits?

Every suggestion shows pinyin and meaning, you can tap any word to check it, and nothing goes into your message until you choose it. Checking the words you use is part of how you learn them.

Is it on Android or iPhone?

didao is being tested on Android first, and an iPhone version is in development. Neither is publicly available yet. Join the waitlist to hear when that changes.

What will it cost?

Prices aren't announced yet, and joining the waitlist costs nothing. didao will be a subscription, and waitlist members will get a longer free trial and a lower rate. We're also exploring a plan where your price drops a little each month you stay subscribed, down to a base price, because the more you learn, the less you should need the help.

What leaves my phone?

When you ask for help, the text needed for that request is sent to the AI service that writes the suggestion. Nothing is sent while you're only typing. Your saved phrases, flashcards and history stay on your phone unless you export them.
